AU
AU
AU (pronounced "ay-you") is the work of multi-instrumentalist/singer Luke Wyland. Begun in 2005 while finishing up his degree from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, then moved Portland, OR. Currently a full time duo with Dana Valatka on drums, it can be a loosely defined amalgam of players that can swell to double digit numbers with full choir in tow and sees some of Portland's finest lending a helping hand. It's sound is vast and "deftly treads a narrow bridge between the loose-associations of the backwoods freak-folk crowd and the more formalized concoctions of art-poppers like Brian Eno."Since the release of it's critically acclaimed debut album in 2007, it has become a road worn live act who have been touring incessantly for the last few years throughout the US and Europe with great bands including most recently Deerhoof, the Dodos, and WHY?.

They've released two LP's (Au and Verbs) including an earlier solo album under the moniker 'luc' entitled peaofthesea (Aagoo 2005). AU's latest EP, Versions, was released as a limited edition of 500 on 10" vinyl in October of 2009 on Aagoo Records. Recorded in Vermont and New Hampshire through the winter of 2008-9, it stands as a document of the duo's distinctive ability to reinterpret songs from their recorded form and the heightened energy of their live show. With Dana's virtuosic drumming spawned from a youth playing in heavy metal bands, Luke's ability to multitask on numerous instruments at once, and their "special one-on-one musical, almost telepathic connection," it is a snap shot into their sprawling sets that find them deftly navigating between bombastic walls of sound, lilting lyrical numbers, and carnivalesque organ celebrations.
Howth
No longer the bedroom folk duo of their early years, the Brooklyn quintet is slowly revealing their new identity as a sonically adventurous band. The inspired songwriting and lyrical storytelling of Carl Creighton remains a central focus for Howth while the surrounding sounds created by Blake Luley, Neil Acharya, Aviva Stampfer and Jeremy Duvall continue to grow into a a swelling, dynamic force.

Indulging on the melodies and sentiment of 90’s indie rock, Howth also reaches for the soaring heights of classic ’70s rock while adding in dynamic ambient textures inspired by Eno and minimalism.

Within Howth’s new songs, Creighton gives a voice to the soul-searching outsider attempting to find a place within claustrophobic environment of the urban landscape. Like a weed pushing through a crack in the sidewalk, their music reflects the perseverance of organic over artificial.
Skeletons (Acoustic)
Skeletons (Acoustic)
As a co-founder of Shinkoyo, Matt Mehlan retains the label’s core ideals of collaboration, experimentation and unpredictability with his Skeletons project. Founded in 2002 while still students at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, the band has called New York City home since 2005, making an indelible mark on the underground music scene in the city and beyond. In its various incarnations (Skeleton$, Skeletons and the Kings of All Cities, Skeletons & the Girl Faced Boys, Skeletons Big Band), the band has released 6 full length albums, the most recent being “Money”, “Lucas”, and “Git” - released respectively on Tomlab (the former) and Ghostly International (the latter two).

Today, Skeletons is a musical personality. Joined by guitarist Jason McMahon and percussionist Jon Leland, the band can be heard as everything from a duo to a quintet (with Mike Gallope of the band Starring on keyboard and Pete Vogl of Bow Ribbons on bass). In 2009 the band formed Skeletons Big Band – a large ensemble created to explore the orchestral and outer limits of their ideas, with upwards of 18 musicians from Brooklyn’s thriving underground. The first Skeletons Big Band record, “The Bus”, will be released in the coming months. The band has shared stages across North America and Europe with Erykah Badu, Dirty Projectors, Matthew Dear, Marc Ribot, Deerhoof, Arto Lindsay, Animal Collective, Excepter, Prefuse73, TV on the Radio, Wire, Damo Suzuki and Holger Czukay of Can, John Zorn, Man Man, Joan of Arc and many many more.

Also in 2011 is the premiere of a new string quartet on March 27, composed by Matt and commissioned by the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the forthcoming Nine 11 Thesaurus record (on Social Registry), with beats produced by Matt & Tim Dewit (Gang Gang Dance). Jon and Jason have also been lending their skills to the live bands of both Glasser and Janka Nabay, the Sierra-Leonean refugee and “King of Bubu Music”.
Leverage Models
Leverage Models
Leverage Models is the recent creation of producer, performer and Pentecostal cult survivor Shannon Fields. Leverage Models songs follow deeply broken human and animal characters set in miniature, lost countries where corporate jargon, self-loathing, fear, & desperate nihilism grow limbs and walk around. However, Leverage Models' music privileges immediate pleasure, dancing, unhinged joy, and draws an alternate history of 'roots' music that largely abandons fashionable and canonized tastes. At the turn of 2014 the debut Leverage Models LP materialized and drew comparisons to ABC, Scritti Politti, Material, Happy Mondays, Lisa Lisa & The Cult Jam, The Associates, & Tears for Fears. PopMatters gave it a 9.0 score and called it “intensely visceral”. Pitchfork gave it an 8.2 and called it a “10 track wonder that hits all the pleasure centers”. The Village Voice called it “infatuating” and Other Music called it “undeniably infectious”. Leverage Models toured nationally for several months with an unsustainable amount of percussion, and then withdrew from performance for the better part of the year. This is their first show in a long while.
