I Guess I'm Floating's 5th Anniversary! (SOLD OUT)
I Guess I'm Floating's 5th Anniversary! (SOLD OUT)
Come celebrate the 5th Anniversary of I Guess I'm Floating's illustrious history:

Half a decade into the 21st century, two college students with a fierce passion for music and knack for writing were wandering around the edges of the Internet. In a fitting twist of fate, Connor McGlynn and Nathaniel Gravely first became acquainted by way of the late Elliott Smith. Sharing live recordings on Soulseek and casually chatting about the music that made them move, Nathaniel noticed Connor had just created a music website weeks before digital destiny had brought them together.

Shortly thereafter the two joined forces and dove ear-first into the blogosphere, combining two unique writing styles and complimentary musical tastes… for some reason or another people seemed to like what IGIF was all about. Within a year of the dynamic duo’s debut, IGIF was awarded the 2006 Weblog for ‘Best Music Blog’ and has picked up nominations in the same category every year since.

Nowadays, although IGIF might look different than the IGIFs of the past, our intentions are what they’ve always been. For hours every day we strive to complete two goals: First, to introduce new bands to people who are just as excited about music as we are. Second, but not least, to provide an accessible avenue of promotion and distribution to bands and artists who might not otherwise pick up the recognition they deserve. There are two kinds of music blogs — 1) those that respond to (and leech off of) the scene, that cycle hype and talk about bands that are already being talked about, and 2) those that seek out new bands and new sounds, those that discover next year’s buzz bands. We always strive to be the latter because in the end that’s what IGIF is all about: helping music fans discover awesome new music and helping bands discover awesome new fans.
Beach Fossils (DJ Set) - (Set time: 1:00 AM)
The jangly, self recorded ramblings of Brooklyn’s Dustin Payseur, Beach Fossils offers hauntingly catchy tunes that blend the energy of an impulsive road trip with the melodious wandering of a lucid dream. Sun drenched riffs, kaleidoscopic rhythms and hazy lyrics saturate Beach Fossils’ first release, the album’s carefree vibe perfectly summed up through song titles such as “Daydream,” “Vacation,” and “Lazy Day.”

Shifting to a full band with unrivaled energy, Beach Fossils’ captivating recordings translate to a mind-altering live show. Sloshing vigorous jams with reverb and effortless harmonies, Beach Fossils retains their earnest sound while bewitching the audience with their animated performance.
A Place To Bury Strangers - (Set time: 12:00 AM)
A Place To Bury Strangers have often been called “the loudest band in New York”. This may very well be the case, but unlike much so-called “loud” rock and roll that’s out there, APTBS is not loud simply for the sake of it. The sonically overdriven sound they’ve accomplished is no clumsy accident, but a carefully cultivated and well-maintained entity all its own, fostered by an unbridled passion that’s clearly evident in every live show they play and each recording they make. A Place To Bury Strangers does not so much play songs as allow them to pour out. They are songs about longing, heartbreak and confusion played extremely well and at a passionately loud volume.

While there are obvious reference points: Pornography-era Cure, early Ride, My Bloody Valentine, and pre-1990s Jesus and Mary Chain, the sound is all their own, in part due to singer/guitarist Oliver Ackermann’s day job of building custom guitar pedals (see deathbyaudio.net). Coupled with the solid bass of Jono Mofo and the relentless drumming of Jay Space, the APTBS team is a force to reckon with.

Since forming in 2004, A Place to Bury Strangers had been developing its stellar live reputation in New York City by its constant bombardment of shows. In early April of 2007 the band was rewarded with the opportunity to open for one of their major influences, the Jesus & Mary Chain at Webster Hall. This was quickly followed by another high profile opening slot for the Brian Jonestown Massacre at same venue.

Following the release of their self titled debut album in August of 2007 on Killer Pimp Records, the band accrued rave reviews in a numerous publications including a Best New Music and an 8.4 rating in Pitchfork. The album wound up being one of the top 20 best reviewed records of 2007 according to Metacritic and won Rock album of the year on Tunecore.

The band then rocketed into public consciousness in 2008. Highlights include a full US/Canadian tour with Holy F**k in February/March and being THE band to see at SXSW. This was followed in May by their first full European/UK which culminated in a legendary appearance at the Primavera Festival in Barcelona. That summer the band were handpicked by Trent Reznor to support Nine Inch Nails on an arena tour of the US and appeared at the Oya Festival where they got to play with another of their heroes, the recently reunited My Bloody Valentine.
Caveman - (Set time: 11:00 PM)
Caveman was born in New York in January of 2010, when a group of friends decided it was time to put aside their boyhood ways and start being men. The sound they crafted in that large, dark room they found is equal parts chamber pop, dreamscape, and horror film score.

At a Caveman show you will hear four-part harmonies, spaced-out guitars, synths, and, yes, much drumming. 2010 has been a gallant year for the band, as since their first birthday they have shared the stage with bands such as Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes, White Rabbits, Here We Go Magic, Cursive, Amazing Baby, and Blue Oyster Cult. They recently went into the Loveboat studio with Nick Stumpf (French Kicks) to commit their songs to record. Hang out to their songs, in person, this January 29th.
Guards - (Set time: 10:00 PM)
Guards was formed in New York City when Richie James Follin returned from a European tour to a recording studio with nothing in it but a broken electric 12 string guitar and an omnichord. He wrote and recorded a few songs for his little sister to sing on, but ended up singing on the songs himself. He enlisted the help of his friends (Caroline Polachek of Chairlift, James Richardson of MGMT, Loren Shane Humphrey of Willowz) and family (Madeline Follin of Cults) to guest on some songs and they spread the word without his knowledge via twitter and the internet. Then, he decided to give the songs away for free.

Richie James Follin is 27 and he is originally from southern California. He started the Willowz (lead singer and guitarist) when he was 19 in 2002 and has released 4 records with them as well as a solo record and multiple other projects. He also plays guitar in Cults.
ARMS - (Set time: 9:00 PM)
ARMS
From 2004 to 2009, Todd Goldstein wrote music under the name ARMS, playing most of the instruments himself and recording them in his bedroom in the moments between playing guitar in his main band at the time, Brooklyn's long-running, modestly beloved Harlem Shakes. As ARMS, Todd quietly released the album Kids Aflame in 2008 / 2009 (Melodic UK / Gigantic US). In the summer of 2009, Harlem Shakes disbanded. Upon the breakup of his longtime band, Todd recruited Tlacael Esparza to play drums and Matty Fasano to play bass and sing the songs he'd been writing all along. Soon, the trio began writing songs together, and ARMS was born anew.

ARMS is no longer Todd's solo pseudonym - it's the name of the music that comes out when Todd, Matty, and Tlacael play together. Sad, beautiful, echo-y music that sounds like everything they've loved, blown apart and then put back together piece by piece. ARMS' new EP - called, appropriately, "EP" - is the first five songs of what will become the band's true debut full-length, a loose concept album / song cycle tentatively titled Summer Skills.
Dreamers of the Ghetto - (Set time: 8:00 PM)
